About Course

Description:

This SLP was formulated to respond to a need by natural science graduates who wanted to pursue health sciences programs and engineering graduates who intend to apply for the Biomedical Engineering Masters degree.

Admission Requirements:

Candidates who have completed Grade 12/NSC with Life Sciences and/or Physical Sciences at a minimum of Level 5 with English first language at Level 5

Course Curriculum

•    Foundations of Anatomy, Physiology and Homeostasis (Introduces the relationship between body structure (anatomy) and function (physiology), highlighting how the form of the body structure enables their specific functions and how the coordinated balance of these functions maintains homeostasis)
•    Musculoskeletal system (Provides the body with support, protection and structural framework, with bones serving as sites of blood cell formation and mineral storage, while muscles act on the skeletal framework to produce movement, locomotion, manipulation of the environment, as well as maintain posture and generate heat.)
•    Endocrine system (Consists of glands that secrete hormones and regulate and coordinate processes such as growth, reproduction, metabolism and the use of nutrients by the body.)
•    Cardiovascular system (Consists of the heart, blood and blood vessels, with the heart pumping blood through the vessels to transport oxygen, carbon dioxide, nutrients, hormones and metabolic wastes throughout the body.)
•    Renal System (Eliminates nitrogenous wastes from the body and regulates water, electrolytes and acid-base balance of blood, thereby contributing to the maintenance of homeostasis.)
•    Respiratory system (Supplies the blood with oxygen and removes carbon dioxide, with gas exchange occurring across the thin walls of the alveoli (air sacs).)
•    Nervous System (The body's fast-acting control system, detecting and responding to internal and external changes by coordinating appropriate response through muscles and glands).
