About Course

Description:

The SLP equips professionals with applied competencies to detect, investigate, and prevent food contamination and fraud using forensic and analytical techniques. The programme strengthens public health protection by integrating food safety science, regulatory compliance, risk assessment, and outbreak investigation. Through simulated case scenarios and real-world applications, participants develop scarce, in-demand skills essential for safeguarding food systems in South Africa and beyond.

Admission Requirements:

Any SAQA-recognised Health Qualifications: national diploma, baccalaureus technologiae or bachelor’s degree in Health.
Suitable candidates must be employed either as an Environmental Health Practitioner (EHP), Health and Safety Officer/ Safety, Health, Environment and Quality (SHEQ) Officer or Medical Scientist, Occupational Hygienist in the SADC region.

Course Curriculum

Foundations of Food Forensics and Safety: Introduces core principles of food forensics, risk assessment, food authentication, traceability, and regulatory compliance frameworks.
Environmental and Public Health Aspects of Food Safety: Examines how environmental factors, climate change, agricultural practices, and public health systems influence food contamination and food security.
Detecting Food Contaminants and Adulteration: Focuses on analytical and forensic methods for identifying biological, chemical, and physical contaminants and detecting food fraud.
Food Forensics Case Investigations: Applies forensic reasoning to simulated contamination and outbreak scenarios involving allergens, agrochemicals, pathogens, GMOs, radionuclides, and novel foods.
Advanced Analytical Instrumentation and Data Interpretation in Food Forensics: Provides practical exposure to molecular, spectroscopic, chromatographic, microscopic, and advanced laboratory techniques used in food analysis.
Statistical Modelling, Data Intelligence and Quality Systems in Food Forensics: Covers multivariate statistics, chemometrics, QA/QC systems, compliance monitoring, and supply chain integrity.
Ethical and Professional Responsibilities in Food Safety: Develops ethical decision-making, regulatory enforcement competencies, and professional judgment in food safety investigations.
